Guide to the Kennet and Avon Canal

Safety

Full training concerning safety will be provided. This will include the use of automatic life jackets, fire blanket, fire extinguishers, first aid kit and the life belt. Also the location of safety signage and potential hazards. A manual entitled 'Safe Boat Handling' is provided.

Training

An Inland Waterways Helmsman Instructor will spend a minimum of one hour with you. We will explain how everything works on the boat and the boat handling techniques. We want you to feel happy and confident. There is no rush, we have all the time in the world to help and assist you.

What If We Arrive In Bath By Train

At no extra charge a seven seater car will collect you from the station and return you to the station at the end of your holiday.

Parking

Secure parking is available at no extra charge.

Is It Possible For Someone To Steer The Boat

Yes, skippered boat hire is available at a cost of £70 per day.

What Speed Should We Go, And How Far Can We Go

Please respect other boaters, excessive speed is always a source of concern. If you are asked to slow down, you are going too fast. The maximum speed limit is 4mph, however 2mph is advisable when passing oncoming boats and moored boats. To calculate how far you can travel, allow an average speed of 3mph plus 15 minutes per lock or swing bridge. A map and various guide books are provided. How Many People Can Sleep On The Boat

Grand Cru sleeps six, two cabins with double beds, plus two single sofa beds in the living area. Premier Cru also sleeps six, one double cabin, one cabin with two single beds and two sofa beds in the living area.

What Should We Bring With Us

Non-slip shoes, sun cream (for the summer), waterproof jackets, mobile phone and camcorder chargers. You may bring other electrical appliances but please check with us first. If you have an iPod it can be connected to our sound system. There is a collection of books, DVDs CDs and games onboard, you are welcome to bring more. Everything else is provided, just bring lots of food and drink.

Fuel & Water

You will be provided enough diesel and gas for your trip, but you will need to top up with water every other day. The water points are marked on the map.

Insurance

Instead of charging a £45 non-returnable damage waiver, we ask for £100 damage deposit at the start of your holiday, returnable in full. We highly recommend you purchase travel and cancellation insurance. We have researched the market and have found this comparison site to be the best. Insurance Price Comparison site.

Pets

Pets are allowed at no extra charge. However we do ask to lkeep them off the furniture and the bedding please.

TV & Music

The boat is equipped with a digital radio, freeview TV, 300 watt surround sound system, DVD and CD player. Don't forget to bring your iPod.

Bicycles

Bicycles can be stored on the roof of the boat at no extra charge (at own risk)

Our Welcome Pack Includes:

Children

Children of all ages are welcome aboard

What Does "Grand Cru" & "Premier Cru" Mean

Fishing

You will need an EA rod licence, easily available. We can advise you on how to get a licence and which bait and tackle to use. Go to waterscape or environmental agency to purchase your rod licence online.

We can also arrange the purchase of local fishing permits. Go to Bathampton AA for expert fishing information.Please Note: No live bait is allowed in the boat please.

Wheelchair Access

We can provide a wheelchair ramp to get aboard the boat. Please Note: There are steps to get into the boat.

Where Can We Moor Overnight

You can moor anywhere you like on the towpath side of the canal except: where you see a sign. 'private mooring', mooring reserved for lock or swing bridge use, turning points (winding holes),water points, and between locks that are very close to each other. If you are on the river always moor towards the flow of water.

Overseas Visitors

Phone: +44 (0) 1225 312935. Free collection from Bath Railway Station. We can arrange collection from Bristol Airport. If you wish, please bring your national flag to display on the boat.

Payment

A 25% deposit is required when booking, followed by full payment four weeks prior to the hire date. All credit cards are welcome.

How Eco-Friendly Is It

Take the fuel a Boeing 747 consumes during a ten hour flight and transfer it to Grand Cru.
